There is a Korean dish 떡볶이, where rice cakes are served, just like they are pictured above, but super red looking which = super spicy. This dish beef stir fry with rice-cakes-(소고기 떡볶이) suites the taste buds of kids, those who can’t handle/don’t like spicy, and those have more of a sweet tooth. Even though this dish is super sweet it is also VERY savory, you will def love it.

Get two bowls- in the first fill with water and let one package of rice cakes soak for a few hours
In the second bowl, marinate your meat~
put in:
1 tbsp of garlic (minced)
1 tbsp of sesame seed oil
3 tbsp of soy sauce (low sodium one better for kids)
2-3 tbsp of sugar
a tbsp of sesame seeds
* Get half a package of shabu shabu meat (like half a lb), cut it up into one inch strips
Mix everything together, saran wrap, and set in the fridge for a few hours. When the rice cakes are done soaking, start cooking.

Get a pot and boil water. Add the rice cakes, and take them out after about 5 mins. Taste it and make sure it is chewy not soggy =)
Drain them and rinse with cold water, and set aside in a bowl.

Get your veggies-
-Half a small onion and slice into thin strips the long way
-Half a carrot (medium sized). Use a potato peeler, and peel the top skin off, and throw away.
continue to use the potato peeler to “peel” (shred) the carrot in more fine strips until it is gone. Half all the strips so that they are about 2 inches long.
-3 stalks of green onion. I use only the green part-cut into 2 inch pieces

Get a large pan, and add about a tbsp of sesame oil. Throw in your veggies & sauté.
After about 4-5 mins, add your marinated beef. Simmer 5 more mins until the beef is brown.

Throw in the cooled rice cakes and sauté for another 2 mins.


Serve alone or with rice
